Resignation

That difficult “it’s not you, it’s me” conversation that ends one relationship and starts the next.

This tends to be the most difficult part of the process, and hopefully this will help you to make this part of the process as painless as possible.

Resignation Preparation

Make sure you have signed your contract for your new role first before resigning.

Remember why you are taking the new role, and have the mindset that this is a necessary part of that journey.

This will be an awkward moment. Lean into the difficulty and get it done first thing. Remember that if the situation was reversed and the company was making cuts, they would with regret make you redundant – this is part of business.

Face to face and letter or email first?

Two options here. You can email your resignation first, and then meet your boss to finalise your exit. This is a good method as it sets the scene and means that the meeting will not be too awkward.

You can meet first and hand over a letter in that meeting. This is more personable, but can lead to awkward conversations and counter offer discussions that you dont really want to have (more on that later).

This meeting first approach can be leading your employer on as they might feel this is up for discussion and salvageable. If you are resigning, you are doing this for a reason and you should already be in the mindset of having one foot in your new role already – the resignation should be firm but polite

Counter offers

You may well receive a counter offer to stay.

Why? Because if you leave, they need to hire someone new, causing an intermediate issue which is easier to resolve by offering you more money and a promotion

Dont take the counter offer

The underlaying reasons that caused you to look around will not go away, and 85% of candidates taking a counter offer and back on the market within 6 months

Knowing this, your current company will begin searching for your replacement in the background

And finally, how much are you really valued if it took a resignation for them to take steps to improve things?

In Summary

Resignation isn’t fun – but its necessary, and the sooner you do it, the sooner its done.

Make sure you have signed the contract for your new job before resigning – it protects you.

Keep your resignation letter or email short and polite

Do not accept a counter offer – short term comfort will become mid to long term pain, and you’ll end up looking again within 6 months
