How to Ensure a Successful Onboarding Process

Getting the onboarding right will ensure maximum productivity in the role long term!

What needs to be in place for you to land successfully before you start?

What does success in the job look like?

What communication is required throughout the pre and post onboarding process to make sure that success is achieved?

Here is how to make sure that you do onboarding properly.

Before starting

  1. Check you have everything from your new employer – Laptop, Phone and so on
  2. Be clear on your first day plan – what time to arrive, dress code, who to report to and what the first week looks like.
  3. Check any non-compete restrictions from your current employment contract and ensure these are communicated to your new employer

Starting smoothly

The first thing to establish on starting is your line managers expectations of you in the first 3 months in the job. Find out what good looks like, and what your KPI’s and success measures are

The next step is to quickly connect with any Stakeholders you will be dealing with, and any team members you havent met yet – establish those relationships early, find out whats important to them and how you can help them and the team to achieve the best results.

You should also have review meetings booked in nice and early – weekly for the first month, and then bi weekly for months two and three. Use these sessions to gain feedback from your line manager, and also to pass on feedback from your side too

If you found your job through a Recruiter, they should be reaching out in the same time frames as above to ensure you are onboarding well. You can raise any concerns or issues with them too; They will want to help you resolve them for all parties concerned.

In Summary

Dont rely on the company to ensure you have everything you need before starting – mistakes happen, and your productivity to resolve issues will go down well with your new employer

Establish expectations early, and relationship with any key stakeholders and team members you will be working with

Finally, raise any issues quickly – early raised means early solved, and it shows you are keen to work with all concerned and make a success of your move!
